An Internist diagnoses and treats degenerative, autoimmune, infectious, metabolic, and other disease processes that may affect any organ system in the body. An Internist is not to be confused with an Intern, which is a veterinarian who is in the first year of post-graduate training.
The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (www.acvim.org) was founded in 1973. The ACVIM certifies Specialists in Internal Medicine and other specialties such as Oncology. To become Board Certified in Internal Medicine, a veterinarian must graduate from veterinary school, complete an internship or equivalent experience, complete an ACVIM approved residency program and pass both a qualifying and certifying Board examination in the area of specialty. After successful completion of these requirements, the Internist is a Specialist and referred to as a “Diplomate ACVIM (Internal Medicine)”.
