Outside of AVETS, Dr. Smarick

can be found paddling white

water, trail running or spending

time with his family, which

includes Callie, a pure-bred

American Californian Pound

Hound; and two cats, PK-

(with one eye) and Loo (with two).

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine: University of Pennsylvania, 1991.
  • Residency in Emergency and Critical Care: University of California, 2003.
  • ACVECC Board Certification: 2003.

 

Experience

  • Intern: private emergency practice, Milwaukee, WI, 1991-1992.
  • Chief of Staff: Animal Emergency Clinic, California, 1992-1993.
  • Founded Allegheny Veterinary Emergency Associates in  Plum, PA, 1994.
  • Relocated to Monroeville and expanded to AVETS, 2005.
  • Guest Scientist: Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh, 1996-2000.
  • Veterinary Advisor: City of Pittsburgh EMS, 2000.
  • Published in veterinary textbooks and in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and Resuscitation.
  • Lectures nationally and regionally at such venues as International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium and the North American Veterinary Conference.
  • Professional interests include CPCR, fluid therapy, positive pressure ventilation, and intensive care monitoring.
